Hayden Sherman Artist Analysis

This page depicts two marvel superheroes, Daredevil and Miles Morales Spider-man. This piece conveys a great sense of motion through the posing of these characters yet the lack of background means they could be presented in almost any environment and this piece would still work with varying degrees of effectiveness however. The erratic direction of the webbing conveys a sense of speed within this piece as it contrasts to the sharp taught line of Daredevil. This makes emphasis on their different styles of movement ad how Spider-man is vastly more youthful and energised, whereas Daredevil is older and more precise with how he acts. Through this decision he has shown that his work is not just for a visual effect but rather to be an accurate representation of the structured characters to be a part of a strong and compelling story. The eyes of both characters appear to be fixed on a single point creating tangible leading lines, most likely to progress the story to the next panel adding to the composition of the page in progress.

The ink blots across the page give off a dirty effect for the characters, showing potentially that they are beginning to get worn down or fatigued. The expressive marks made to represent the shadows give the characters a sense that they were cast in harsh light which illuminates the contours of the costumes. Sherman’s use of harsh lines within this piece gives off an effect of motion as this method of mark making creates a distressed form, giving the characters an essence of haste and wind resistance. I feel that if this piece had been coloured then the artists linework would’ve been overpowered by the deep reds and burgundy of the costumes details, therefore I believe by keeping this piece to a monochromatic format helped to exemplify the linework.
